ARIE MONROE

Arie was born and raised in the Kansas City area. She started drawing at a very young age. Even then, she was criticized for drawing people with square heads. (She still thinks it makes more sense.) Arie attended high school at Paseo Academy of Fine and Performing Arts. After graduation in 1997, she went on to UMKC to earn a BA in studio art.

Not feeling as if the program there taught her enough to get her a job, she is continued to take art classes around the Kansas City area. Arie started doing caricatures in 1998 at Worlds of Fun. She says, “I love the art of caricature. It is a fun, creative and expressive genre of art. Plus, people actually pay you to make fun of them. Worlds of Fun is a great summer job for any young artist looking for a way to improve their skills. But it is not easy in the beginning. It takes a lot of work to learn how to do it right.”

After about 4 years working as a caricature artist and building her portfolio, Arie decided to attend the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon Graphics in summer 2005 after joining the Kansas City Comic Creator Network where she learned about creating mini comics and what it was like to work in the comics industry. “Creating and reading comics has become a great passion for me. They have created an artistic outlet im my life I never would have imagined."

She is currently in her second year studying animation. She also does freelance illustration, graphic design, and caricatures whenever and wherever she can. In the past year she has worked on such projects as the QB Dolls, a book showcasing the work of the female students at the Kubert school looking to work in comics and animation, Hey Sophie, for Stirred Waters studios, designing characters and doing chapter illustrations.

Heaven Can Wait

I'm working on two comicbook that I will have online later this year. One, a love fanasty book, is about two people in love. Both of them die and what they do to come back to life makes this story and may make you cry because it is sad. But you will also be laughing because it is so funny to learn how this story start and end. The name of this comic is called "Heaven Can Wait"

My other comic is a superhero bookabout a family of super heroes with lots of action and part soap opera. I like anime and lots of action movies. I always wanted to draw my own comic and now, thank to the internet, I will put two online soon. Check out some of my work.

DECEMBER SUN

December Sun is a title that I've been progressively writing over the span of the last few years. Sadly, it's taken me about that same amount of time to complete the first issue, but considering that I've only been using scraps of time to complete pencils, inks, copies/reductions, scans, PC size formatting, grayscale halftones, and lettering, I suppose this might be reasonable.

I've given up computer games, more or less, in order to focus on completing this title. Yes, it would have been nice to work with someone else on this book, but because of the piecemeal approach to its completion, and my sporadic windows of available time, this was probably the best way.

The story of DS, from a foundational viewpoint, is a story of the kind of character I would have liked to read about when I was 12. It's the comic I never had, but would have enjoyed reading. I'm finding that, the more I write this title, the more I realize I'm writing these stories for my own enjoyment. With this in mind, the title will probably never make money, but at least I will have the satisfaction of knowing that I wrote a book that I enjoyed.

Additionally, the story (and art) are patterned after writers and artists who I've enjoyed in the past. I can only hope I'm not indirectly/blatantly ripping anyone off. I've tried to throw in enough unique ideas into the story to keep it original, but in this day and age, it seems like everything has already been done, in one form or another.

DS is also an avenue I'm using to explore themes of Christianity, in both an allegorical C.S. Lewis manner but also through direct discussion. I think throwing in Christian theology into a superhero book will make for some interesting storylines, and for the most part, this works in an exploratory sense for me.

Countless rejection letters from the big comic studios have made me cynical and callous enough to give up on sending out endless submission packages and just write my own title, give it out to friends, and sell it to anyone interested. If it ends up never selling and I never get a huge Hollywood contract, so be it. I still had fun with it.

ESTRUS

MariNaomi has been self publishing Estrus Comics since 1998.

Estrus is a collection of embarrassing autobiographical stories about my love life.
My stories and artwork have appeared in such publications as Action Girl Comics, Not My Small Diary, the Comics Journal, Pet Noir: An Anthology of Strange but True Pet Crimes, indieFLY and True Porn.

Reviews of Estrus Comics #4 …
“For a laugh, check out MariNaomi’s comic ‘Recipe for Disaster,’ which hits a little too close to home for the culinarily challenged.”
- Utne Reader 2006

“MariNaomi avoids going the ‘woe is me’ route while telling stories of her romantic life experiences. Instead, she looks at the humorous and absurd side of love and relationships all the way from kindergarten to present day. The innocence of first kisses, awkward teenage sexual experiences and post 9/11 hippy boyfriends are all covered in the 20 pages that make up the first half of this issue. While she focuses more on the let downs she’s had to endure, you get the feeling that she’s laughing at most of these experiences with you ... All said, Estrus Comics is a fun, well-told comic.”
- Broken Pencil 2006

“[Estrus is] a diverse collection of stories, and I highly recommend it.”
- NewPages.com 2006

“The subject matter—coming-of-age stories about sex and love lost—is quite personal, but somehow universal. Hey, we were all stupid teenagers once.”
- Zine World
